War Stories: Red Grandy, Cold War Photographer

Reagan Speaking in German Parliament

German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Defense Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher look on as President Reagan addresses the West German parliament in Bonn during the Economic Summit Conference. Grandy got lucky while shooting the President with a 1260 mm lens when Genscher leaned back in his seat, putting him between Schmidt and Reagan to make it a good tight wirephoto shot. UPI and the German wire services used this photo over all others taken by their photographers. 9 June 1982.
