Marine
Landing: Maneuvers in Dardenelles, Turkey
At the break
of dawn, 30 September 1957, U. S. Marines waded ashore from their landing
craft after having departed from U. S. Navy ships of the Sixth Fleet,
assigned to the Mediterranean area. The NATO air, sea, and land maneuver,
named Operation Deep Water, took place at the same area as the ill-fated
amphibious landing made by the British in 1915, during World War I, a
plan highly touted by Winston Churchill to try and open a route from the
Mediterranean to Russia. |
