North Country Public Radio is celebrating its 35th year of broadcasting. The public radio station, which serves the northern tier of New York state, as well as southern Ontario and northwestern Vermont, first signed on the air on March 7, 1968.
The station has recognized the anniversary for the past several years with a March Membership Drive. This year, that event will be launched on Monday, March 3 with the inauguration of WEB MONDAY. Listeners will be invited to support the station online, through it's website, <ncpr.org>. Visitors will have an opportunity to register for the grand prize drawing, a Boston Acoustics Receptor Radio. This radio, introduced to the market in November, continues to get much critical acclaim from audiophiles. In addition to great sound, it is very good at pulling in distant FM and AM stations. Also available for viewing are two new station gifts: a 35th anniversary mug featuring an Adirondack landscape painting by artist Sandra Hildreth and a new tee-shirt celebrating NCPR music programs designed by Jazz at the Ten Spot host and St. Lawrence University Fine Arts Professor, Guy Berard.
Most exciting is the opportunity to see how public broadcasting translates into a new medium. Not only can visitors listen to all of NCPR's regular programs online, they can sample the arts of the region in the UpNorth Concert Hall and Gallery, browse the expanded Community Calendar, explore multimedia versions of many of NCPR's top news features, and follow links to the best national programs in public radio.
"We're very pleased to be able to offer listeners another way to support NCPR," said Membership Director, Kathleen Fitzgerald. "Our web site is secure, and our pledge form is easy to navigate. Our online service allows listeners to pledge at their own convenience, anytime, day or night. They can choose their giving level and thank you gifts. The only hard part, will be pulling oneself away from all the interesting features and links available at <ncpr.org>."
NCPR will follow WEB MONDAY with its traditional on-air membership drive. Supporters can pledge online at any time, but the Boston Acoustics Radio drawing will be limited to those who register on March 3, or via the NCPR e-mail newsletter, The Listening Post.
