Need increases at North Country food pantries

The number of people requesting help at North Country food pantries continues to rise. Many are still unable to find work, and more older people are struggling to pay their taxes. Pantries in the region say there's always been enough food for the people in need. But there's worry that leaders in Washington, D.C., will dramatically cut food stamps, and that means pantries will have to pick up the slack.  Go to full article

Farm bureau opposes "rooftop highway"

The group that's pushing for an Interstate to be built from Watertown to Plattsburgh has collected hundreds of local endorsements.

But it just lost an influential one. The New York Farm Bureau passed a resolution earlier in December, opposing the so-called "rooftop highway".  Go to full article

Cuomo: strengthen federal gun laws, close state loopholes

Governor Cuomo says federal gun laws need to be strengthened, and he says New York State's assault weapons ban has loopholes that need to be closed.

Governor Cuomo says the state already has some of the toughest anti-gun laws in the nation, so the focus should really be on the strengthening of federal laws, where a ban on assault weapons was allowed to lapse in 2004. But he says the state's assault weapons ban should be tightened, too. For instance, the semi-automatic weapon used in the Newtown shootings is legal in New York.  Go to full article
