Albany, NY, Feb 12, 2013 — It looks like the decision on whether to allow large-scale hydraulic fracturing in New York state will probably be delayed. In a letter this afternoon, State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah wrote his department needs more time to investigate fracking's potential health impacts. Watertown, NY, Feb 12, 2013 — Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced yesterday that in line with the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, some spousal benefits will be given to same-sex service members and their partners.
The federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act still prohibits many of the major spousal benefits, like housing and health care, from being extended to same-sex couples. But Panetta's announcement still had advocates for gay service members cheering. Go to full article
Washington, DC, Feb 12, 2013 — As gun control talks continue in Washington, the North Country's representative in the House thinks Congress should tread carefully on a matter he says has far-reaching constitutional implications.
Congressman Bill Owens said recently that gun control efforts should start by focusing on areas of common interest, like expanded background checks for gun buyers. The Democrat from Plattsburgh believes that some of the other issues being discussed on the national level, like tighter restrictions on assault weapons, are too volatile, and it makes sense to move forward with less controversial issues.
