In Buffalo, an Artful (and Epxensive) Sort of Death
Nov 24, 2004 — Buffalo is known for its long association with architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Several of his buildings are now being restored. The latest of his designs to be newly built is already on display in the city. Its not a house or a museum -- it's a mausoleum. Buffalo's oldest cemetery is using one of Wright's designs as part of a new marketing campaign, designed to attract upscale funerals. Brian Mann visited recently and has our story. Go to full article
Books: Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy
Nov 19, 2004 — The use of humans by other humans as sources of free labor and without regard to the right of self-determination of those dominated is, according to sociologist Kevin Bales, as old as humanity and very much a reality in the contemporary world. Bales is president of "Free the Slaves", a non-profit organization working to end slavery worldwide. Bales has spent years researching slavery and he's the author of the book, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy. Kevin Bales gives a lecture tonight (7 pm) at SUNY-Potsdam. He told Todd Moe that slavery began some five-thousand years ago and continues today. He says, there's been an increase in slavery in the last 50 years. Go to full article
Walmart Friends, Foes Face Off in Potsdam
Nov 17, 2004 — In Potsdam and the surrounding area, more than a thousand "Walmart Yes" lawn signs line the roads. Supporters of a 188,000 square foot proposed Supercenter outside the village have collected two thousand signatures. Opponents have written hundreds of letters against the project. The two camps made their cases last night before the Potsdam town planning board. More than 300 people packed a public hearing over Walmart's draft environmental impact statement.
