Mar 03, 2006 — Maple Ridge wind farm on the Tug Hill Plateau is the biggest wind power producer east of the Mississippi. Its 120 turbines are set over 14 miles in 4 Lewis County towns. They can spin out up to 170 megawatts of electricity, enough to power most of Lewis, St. Lawrence, and Jefferson Counties. This summer, Maple Ridge will build another 90 turbines. The Tug Hill region is at the cutting edge of a wind energy boom. And it's benefiting economically, earning tens of millions of dollars in tax payments and land leases a year. That's the trade-off for a ridgeline that will never look the same. Jan 04, 2006 — The village of Lowville has a new landmark to greet visitors in 2006. The Lowville Producer's Dairy Co-op bought a ten-foot tall, 1000-pound ceramic cow last month. The mega-bovine now graces the front lawn of the coop's cheese store on Route 12. It cost $10,000, which raised eyebrows among some of the coop's farmers. Dec 28, 2005 — State Police in Oneida County arrested 10 illegal Mexican immigrants yesterday. Troopers responded to a vehicle that had slid off of Route 12. David Sommerstein spoke with Sergeant Kevin Maxwell. He said police from Utica who spoke Spanish helped find out the nine men and one woman were on their way to a farm in the Lowville area. He didn't know which farm. None of the Mexicans had identification. Maxwell says they were packed into a pick-up truck.  Go to full article
