Mar 28, 2003 — Over the last several months, the border north of Plattsburgh has been overwhelmed by Pakistani families trying to leave the U.S. Shelters in Plattsburgh and Burlington have been full since late December. Now, activist groups in those cities are bracing for a much larger wave of asylum seekers, this one triggered by a new US-Canada immigration treaty that goes into affect on April 21st. Mar 21, 2003 — Today is the deadline for thousands of Pakistanis and Saudis living in the U-S, who are required to register with the Federal government. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security say the program has been a success. But special registration sent shockwaves through New York's Muslim immigrant community.
