Mar 25, 2010 — Here's hoping Cornell will advance in the NCAA tournament tonight.Let's Go, Big Red!
When I decided to leave Chapel Hill, North Carolina, my basketball-loving hometown, to go to college in Ithaca, New York, I didn't fully realize how much I'd miss the game.
At Cornell, everyone loves hockey. As a freshman, I tried to get caught up in the craze. I camped out with friends, to get season tickets. When Cornell played Colgate, I watched gleefully as my peers threw tubes of toothpaste on the ice. When we played Harvard, I admired the more-ardent fans who hurled fish over the glass.
Sure, it was fun, but it wasn't ACC basketball.
After UNC had such a lackluster season, I'm unbelievably happy — really unbelievably, 'cause who woulda thunk it? — that I have a team to root for in the NCAA tournament. Tonight, Cornell will face Kentucky in the Sweet Sixteen. The tipoff is at 9:57 p.m. ET. I'll be awake, cheering them on, hoping that John Jaques and the team can pull off the unthinkable.
Fingers crossed.
