Sep 10, 2010 — Seventeen days after the primary, we now have a winner in the Vermont Democratic gubernatorial primary: It is State Senate President Peter Shumlin. It took 17 days for Democrats in Vermont to arrive at their gubernatorial nominee, but it's the same fellow who finished on top in the Aug. 24 primary: Peter Shumlin.
Shumlin, the president of the state Senate, escaped past state Sen. Doug Racine by 203 votes, with Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz finishing a close third. Here are the totals, as per the Associated Press:
Shumlin 18,301
Racine 18,098
Markowitz 17,601
What made the past 17 days so interesting is that all the Democrats toured the state, campaigning together, in a show of unity. But it also meant that Democrats spent 17 days without knowing the identity of their nominee.
Shumlin faces GOP Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie in November. The incumbent, Jim Douglas (R), is retiring after four two-year terms.
