Sept. 24, 1980:
The House ethics committee, by a vote of 10-2, urges the expulsion from Congress of Rep. Mike "Ozzie" Myers, a Pennsylvania Democrat involved in the Abscam scandal.
Myers was convicted in federal court on Aug. 30 on bribery, conspiracy and racketeering charges in the corruption probe.
Myers will be expelled from Congress on Oct. 2, the fourth member of the House in history to suffer that fate and the first since 1861, when three members were charged with treason for serving in the Confederate army.
Meanwhile, Myers' name will remain on the November ballot in Pa.'s 1st District, where he will still get more votes than the Republican nominee but fall to an independent (and life-long Republican), Tom Foglietta, who will caucus with the Democrats.
