Oct. 29, 1968:

With just a week to go before the election, Minnesota Sen. Eugene McCarthy endorses Vice President Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign.

The endorsement by McCarthy, an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, comes a bit grudgingly.  McCarthy's campaign came to an end with a first ballot victory by Humphrey at the tumultuous party convention in Chicago in August.

McCarthy also announces that he will not seek re-election in 1970 to the Senate seat he first won in 1958.
