In another expected outcome, Republican Marco Rubio will be the new senator from Florida, beating Gov. Charlie Crist, who left the Republican Party to run as an independent, and Kendrick Meek, the Democrat.
With 34 percent of the votes counted according to the Miami Herald site at the time of this writing Rubio, a 39-year old Cuban-American had 50 percent of the vote to Crist 29 percent. Meek had 20 percent. As in other races, the pollsters got the dimensions of this race right.
Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House, was supported by the Tea Party though he didn't run as the Tea Party candidate per se. He will fill the seat once occupied by Mel Martinez, another Cuban American.
