Dec 7, 2010 — Edwards died a day after her family said doctors advised no more treatment. She was a sympathetic symbol of inner strength for how she dealt with life's adversities -- the death of a son, her cancer diagnosis and her marriage's breakup.Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of John Edwards, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, died from cancer Tuesday at age 61.
Edwards died in the morning, a day after her family issued a statement saying her doctors informed her that further treatment for her cancer would be futile. They also said she was surrounded by family and friends in her final hours.
In her last years, Edwards had become a sympathetic symbol of inner strength for how she dealt with terrible adversities — the death of a 16-year old son in a car accident, her breast cancer diagnosis and the break-up of her marriage after learning of her husband's affair with a campaign videographer.
Here's NPR's obit. The Raleigh News Observer Web site has her family's statement.
