Government and business leaders came together in New Orleans on Monday to rally support for keeping the NBA's Hornets in the Crescent City.
Owners George Shinn and Gary Chouest are selling the team to the league, with hopes that a local ownership group will eventually buy the franchise. The Hornets have been in New Orleans since 2002, having moved there from Charlotte.
Gov. Bobby Jindal and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu called on the people in the region to show their support for the team with ticket purchases. The Hornets can terminate their lease on the arena in New Orleans ahead of its 2014 end date if average attendance is too low.
The Times Picayune was at the news conference and quoted Jindal saying:
"Really their future is in our hands. One of the things we can do in the short term is for our people to show up. We are asking the people in Southeast Louisiana and the region to buy those tickets.''
