The British government has awarded the London pedestrian crossing that graces the cover of the Beatles' legendary Abbey Road album with a 'Grade II' protected status. Reuters cites British Tourism minister John Penrose:
'This London zebra crossing is no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a 10-minute photo-shoot one August morning in 1969, it has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage.'
However, the BBC points out:
The original zebra crossing, where the photograph was taken, was moved several metres for traffic management reasons more than 30 years ago, and no original features remain.
The London Evening Standard says many fans honored the band today by crossing the road. Heck, you don't even have to really be there.
