For a couple of years, Illinois could claim First Lady Michelle Obama who's constantly making people think about their calorie intake.
Now it can also claim Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL.) who'd rather you not think about those calories too much.
Kirk issued a statement just in time for Valentine's Day to alert the world that he has won the right to occupy the Senate's Candy Desk.
Since 1965 when California Republican George Murphy started the tradition, senators given the have had to keep it filled with goodies.
Don't think of this as merely an effort to keep a tradition alive, Kirks suggest. We're talking jobs, jobs, jobs here (and maybe a few cavities.)
From his news release:
"Holding the Senate Candy Desk provides me an opportunity to promote employment among Illinois candy makers," said Kirk. "Chicagoland is the center of this industry with over 3,400 jobs represented by the participating Illinois companies."
