N.Y. Looks To Combine Juvenile Detention Facilities

Apr 13, 2011 (All Things Considered) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to save $50 million by consolidating the state's 25 juvenile detention facilities, which has hundreds of empty beds. That puts him in conflict with lawmakers and union leaders who want to protect jobs -- and with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who wants the state to hand over control of juvenile detention to local officials.
