The flooding from the Mississippi River that's overlapped parts of Memphis is surging south toward three states. CNN says Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana are already inundated. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is the latest state chief to warn residents to evacuate before matters become dangerous.
The House Armed Services Committee passed defense legislation in a very late night session. The bill spends $118 billion on the Afghan and Iraq wars and pays for new aircraft, ships and subs. The AP reports it also requires the heads of each branch of service to certify that gays and lesbians serving openly won't affect military readiness, even though President Obama signed a law reversing the ban on this last December.
There were fewer home foreclosures in April. Bloomberg reports they were down 34% from what they were a year earlier. The report cites RealtyTrac, which says the drop is due to increasingly slow foreclosure process as lenders try to deal with a backlog of cases and new ones flooding the market.
And Princess Beatrice of Britain will auction her unusual headgear for charity. Beatrice, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth and the cousin of newlywed Prince William, attended his recent nuptials wearing a remarkable thing on her head that is actually called a 'fascinator'. The New York Daily News says it has been 'compared to a woman's fallopian tubes, moose antlers, a squid and a decorative toilet seat'.
