Actress Sally Field brings to life First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln on screen with the role she plays opposite Daniel Day Lewis in the biopic film Lincoln.

From NPR's New York bureau last week, Field spoke with guest host Jennifer Ludden on Talk of the Nation about her extensive preparation for the role as the 16th president's wife. Some of Field's homework included visiting Mary's home, gaining 25 pounds and using language of the era in text message exchanges with Lewis.

Field, like her co-star Lewis, was generous in showing just how much she loves NPR.
