Even if you've never heard of the Menahan Street Band, you've almost definitely heard its songs: The instrumental sextet has had its funk and soul grooves sampled by some of hip-hop's biggest names, including Jay-Z, Kid Cudi and 50 Cent. Acting as the backbone of the Daptone record label, this extremely talented band has long been essential listening at KCRW.

Watch Menahan Street Band perform "Make the Road By Walking" — which Jay-Z lifted for the production of "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)..." — and then catch the rest of the session at KCRW.com.
