Sep 26, 2013 — In some countries, it's easier to get HIV drugs than an old-fashioned form of penicillin that prevents heart damage from rheumatic fever, scientists say. The world's supply of this type of penicillin has dwindled over the past few decades, but rheumatic fever hasn't.

Feb 16, 2012 — Many hospitals around the nation are perilously close to running out of a form of the old standby cancer drug methotrexate. The reason: a principal supplier of injectable methotrexate shut down in November after it flunked an FDA inspection.

Last week, methylphenidate, the active ingredient in Ritalin and generic equivalents, was officially declared in shortage. The scarcity is a problem faced by an untold number of children and adults with the disorder.
