St. Lawrence County "walking a financial tightrope," says NYS audit

An audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says St. Lawrence County is "walking a financial tightrope". The audit found the county's fund balance decreased 68 percent from 2007 to 2011. Legislators used surplus funds to close budget gaps and keep property tax increases last year to an already-high 14 percent.  Go to full article

Crossing borders to create a small-town Orthodoxy

The single most important day in the Orthodox calendar - Easter, or Pascha, is this Sunday. Many Orthodox churches base their holiest days on the Julian calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar.

Historically, Orthodox communities in the United States have been defined largely by ethnicity and found mostly in urban areas. But a group of Orthodox Christians in the Canton-Potsdam area has created a mission that brings diverse groups together. They don't have a permanent worship space, sometimes share priests with the Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, and even visit a small monastery in Ontario. Their membership includes students, families and seniors. This Sunday will mark the group's first Easter service, or Great Vespers, and a meal of festive foods.  Go to full article

Preview: LAGQ in Potsdam

The Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will perform music of Japan, Cuba, Spain and Latin America in a concert Saturday night in SUNY Potsdam's Hosmer Hall. The concert is presented by Community Performance Series. For more than 30 years, the LAGQ have set the standard among guitar ensembles. Todd Moe spoke with founding member William Kanengiser about Saturday night's concert. The quartet, along with a guitar orchestra of 24 guitarists, will perform a Japanese composition by Shingo Fujii, entitled Shikki, written to honor the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan two years ago.  Go to full article
