Juliet Schor

Liberal values in an age of consumerism

It's probably no surprise that the U.S. is the most consumer-oriented nation in the world. Juliet Schor, a critic of American Consumerism, says we work longer hours, save less and spend more than other industrialized countries. Schor is the author of Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture , and was the keynote speaker for the 2006 Crimmel Colloquium at St. Lawrence University last night. Poetry: Friends are like vegetables

It's harvest season. Earlier this year we began a string of conversations and stories about gardening and art. We visited a West Potsdam gardener and artist on her farm - one of many places in the North Country where everything comes together--nature and art. And in November, we'll meet a Massena man who turns sweet potatoes into art. Max Coots is Minister Emeritus at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Canton. He's also a sculptor, gardener and poet.
