Invasives spread across North Country; threaten Adirondack Park

The Sirex wood wasp has now spread across most of New York and virtually all the North Country. By burrowing and laying eggs in pine and scotch trees, the invasive insect kills them by introducing a fungus into their sap. As Jonathan Brown reports, officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation are considering hauling restrictions, and possibly quarantines, to keep the wasps from spreading further.  Go to full article

Logging debate in Albany ripples through North Country

As we reported last week, New York's comptroller wants more timber harvesting in state forests. Thomas DiNapoli's office conducted an audit of timber sales that found the state could almost double its income from forest products. And he points to the state's forest plan, which allows for the harvest of more trees. The audit drew a quick response from Department of Environmental Conservation officials who said the state's logging policy is meant to ensure healthy forests, not revenue for Albany.
