Brush fires dot St. Lawrence County

Recent high winds and relatively low humidity allowed a number of fires to spring up, mostly in the northwest corner of the North Country. A red flag warning, with a "no-burn" order, is in effect for St Lawrence County. Some residents ignored the order and fire departments dealt with 28 calls over the weekend and another 11 Monday. That's according to Craig Ballard, deputy director of the County's Emergency Services.  Go to full article

Heard Up North: Raising the flag

This Heard Up North starts with a sound; it's the rope that raises and lowers the American flag outside the building that houses our studios in Canton. Kevin Laurence handles maintenance and on this day the flag went back to full staff after it was lowered the week before for the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting. When the flag is at half-staff, it's right outside the little window in our on-air studio. It's another reminder (in addition to the news and people talking about the event) that there is a grief felt by just about everyone. This Saturday night the Orchestra of Northern New York presents its spring concert in Hosmer Hall at SUNY-Potsdam. The concert will feature a variety of music taken mostly from the Romantic period: Rossini, Dvorak, Schumann and Mozart.
