Preview: Bassist Ed Barker Returns to Home Turf

Double bassist Edwin Barker is recognized as one of the most gifted bassists on the American concert scene. He returns to the North Country on Sunday for a concert at the Saranac Central School Auditorium (3 pm). Hill and Hollow Music presents this all-Schubert chamber music program as part of its 10th anniversary season. Barker will be joined on-stage by the piano trio Triple Helix and violist Brian Lindgren. Barker told Todd Moe that Sunday's concert marks his first public performance in the region in 30 years.  Go to full article

Cell phones are taken for granted in most of the U.S. They're a part of everyday life. But in parts of the country where scenery is cherished, cell phone towers are often described as "visual pollution". Now, companies like Verizon and Nextel are disguising their antennas as pine or palm trees -- even the occasional cactus. Kerry's Defeat Humbling For Region's Peace Activists

In the final weeks of the presidential campaign, Senator John Kerry expressed deep doubts about the war in Iraq. The anti-war movement -- including groups here in the north country -- rallied to support the Democrat. But their effort to defeat President George Bush failed. Though he lost in New York state and Vermont, President Bush won both the nation's popular vote and the electoral college. Polls show that, for many Americans, terrorism and moral values outweighed concerns about the war in Iraq. Many peace activists say last week's vote was devastating.
