Shumlin, Scott, take "ice bucket challenge"

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Gov. Peter Shumlin and Lt. Gov. Phil Scott are drying out after taking the "ice bucket challenge," in which participants get a bucket of water and ice cubes dumped on their heads to raise money to fight ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

The two did so Thursday morning on the Statehouse steps, where they were doused by Montpelier Mayor John Hollar, Barre Mayor Thom Lauzon and a team of dousers working from a crane above.  Go to full article

Sorrell, Welch warn: avoid student loan scams

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) The Vermont Student Assistance Corp., Congressman Peter Welch and Attorney General William Sorrell are warning about offers from financial companies that promise student loan "relief."

They say state and federal authorities are raising concerns over companies that promise to help student-loan borrowers ease their financial burden but charge hefty fees for unnecessary services.  Go to full article
