Returning soldiers face another fight: reacclimation

As many as 9,000 troops are expected to return to Fort Drum from Iraq and Afghanistan by the end of August. Speculation has run rampant on the impact this influx will have on Watertown and the rest of the North Country. Jefferson County Sheriff John Burns - when running for re-election - said crime will rise. And there may not be enough housing or jobs for returning soldiers. The military - and military families - are asking a different question: What impact will coming home have on the soldiers themselves? Retired Army Captain Jim Wilkes knows that impact first-hand. After returning from overseas, he started the non-profit Angel Trax to serve soldiers and their families. Keeping an eye on the border

The federal government wants local people to help it keep an eye on the northern border. That's the message the US Border Patrol delivered last week to the Franklin County Legislature. Ross Delacy is a supervisory agent with the department's Swanton Sector, which runs from Ogdensburg to the state line between New Hampshire and Maine. He told Jonathan Brown that local people are perfectly placed to support the Border Patrol's main mission, patrolling the largely unprotected border between the ports of entry.  Go to full article
