Refugee All-Stars: songs of war turn to hope

A chance encounter by two filmmakers in a refugee camp in Guinea, West Africa brings us our next story. Zach Niles and Banker White met the Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars in 2002. They documented the story of survivors of the deadly civil war in Sierra Leone who played music to pass the time in the refugee camp. The resulting film made the festival circuit. It snowballed into a POV documentary on PBS, an appearance on Oprah Winfrey, and a record contract for the band. The Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars' second U.S. tour makes a stop Sunday night in Burlington at the Higher Ground Concert Hall. David Sommerstein spoke with the group's founder.

Donnie Dumont is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Burlington.  Go to full article

Big Sky hopes to reroute North Country flights

Flights from Watertown to Boston have been a big hit with North Country residents. Passenger numbers at the airport have doubled since last year, when a previous carrier flew to Pittsburgh. Ticketing is also up in Ogdensburg. But fewer people are flying out of Massena. Local officials and passengers blame Big Sky Airlines for equipment failures and delays or Delta for ticketing problems. Fred deLeeuw is president of Big Sky. The carrier was granted the federal Essential Air Service subsidy for commercial flights to the North Country earlier this year and began service in April. The Montana-based airline expanded to Vermont and Pennsylvania in June and is now asking to fly subsidized routes to Boston from Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh. DeLeeuw brushes off any suggestion that there are difficulties booking a flight or flying on Big Sky. Instead, he told Jonathan Brown that passenger numbers will continue to increase.  Go to full article
