Obit: Cellist Elsa Hilger

Renowned cellist Elsa Hilger died Tuesday in Shelburne, Vermont. She was 101 years old. Hilger was the first woman, other than a harpist, to play in a major orchestra. She joined the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1934. Hilger received an honorary degree from St. Lawrence University in 1997, and for many years celebrated her birthday with recitals in Canton.
