Soundwaves concert series opens Thursday in Westport

The Village of Westport is the site for an ambitious free concert series, Soundwaves, that begins this week and runs right through August.

The opening concert in this series held the shores of Lake Champlain in Ballard Park will feature jazz trumpeter Taylor Haskins and his ensemble, performing music from his 2014 recording "Fuzzy Logic." Showtime is Thursday at at 7:30 pm.  Go to full article

Celebrated fiddler April Verch to perform in Old Forge, Edwards

Ottawa Valley native April Verch began step dancing at age three, and fiddling at age six. She recorded her first album at 13, and before she was in her 20s she would win the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship and the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition, the first woman to ever win both contests.

Now in her 30s, she has 9 albums to her credit, was a featured performer in the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and tours the world with her band.

She's playing this evening at View in Old Forge, and Saturday evening at the Edwards Opera House. A couple of days ago Joel Hurd caught up with her on tour in North Carolina.  Go to full article

"Voices From The Farm" premieres at Crane School of Music this Sunday

This Sunday at 3 pm an original jazz suite, written in honor of the farmers of the North Country, premieres in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam.

Composer Daniel Kelly is bringing some of New York City's finest jazz musicians to the Crane School of Music for a concert that mixes jazz, the voices of local farmers, and traditional fiddling from Potsdam fiddler Gretchen Koehler.

Singer/Trombonist Natalie Cressman's first northeast tour to include stops in Burlington and Lake Placid

Still in her early 20s, Natalie Cressman already has an impressive musical resume', including a recent degree from the Manhattan School of Music and five years of touring with former Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. Saxophonist Brian McCarthy proves Vermont's jazz scene alive and well

Jazz saxophonist Brian McCarthy grew up in Vermont, went to college near New York City, then returned to Vermont to help ensure that jazz is alive and well in his home state. His latest CD is called "This Just In" and he's bringing the same fine quintet that plays on the CD to Lake Placid on February 21 and Middlebury on February 22.  Go to full article

This Just In....Burlington Saxophonist Brian McCarthy to bring his quintet to Lake Placid

Jazz saxophonist Brian McCarthy grew up in Vermont, went to college near New York City, then returned to Vermont to help ensure that jazz is alive and well in his home state. Chart-topping jazz singer Gregory Porter to perform in Potsdam this week

Since it was released in September 2013, Gregory Porter's Blue Note Records debut, "Liquid Spirit" has been at the top of the jazz charts worldwide. His non-stop travel schedule has a stop in Potsdam on January 23rd.
