A Barn-raising in Upper Jay

But some landowners are taking a little more time, using methods and materials passed down over hundreds of years. Mohawks Inaugurate New Chiefs

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will inaugurate new tribal chiefs this morning for the first time in seven years. Chiefs Jim Ransom, Maggie Terrance and Barbara Lazore will take the reins of the tribal council in a swearing-in ceremony at 10:30.  Go to full article

An Energy Saving Habitat

Tomorrow the affordable housing group Habitat For Humanity of Raquette Valley holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3pm in Rensselaer Falls in St. Lawrence County. The house is a first for the Habitat chapter because in addition to being affordable, it?s also energy efficient. Builders designed a home that uses 30% less energy than a conventional one. The organizers want the project to be a template for building more low-cost, energy-efficient housing. David Sommerstein visited the construction site last winter. He spoke with the designer and volunteers on the project and has this audio montage.

Assembly Takes No Action on Casino Compact

The state Assembly failed to act on a bill that would have ratified the St. Regis Mohawks? 1993 compact for its Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Franklin County. A Court of Appeals decision recently invalidated the agreement.  Go to full article

Mohawks Urge Lawmakers to Validate Casino Compact

Two St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Chiefs and two chiefs-elect were in Albany Tuesday to urge the state legislature to validate a 1993 compact for its Akwesasne Mohawk Casino near Massena. A state Court of Appeals ruling nullified the compact last week.  Go to full article
