Heuvelton Historians Work to Save Long-Forgotten Music Hall
Aug 22, 2003 — A group of residents and historians in Heuvelton is doing its part to preserve a small part of St. Lawrence County's history. The centerpiece of their work is Pickens Hall, one of the oldest buildings in the village. And the building's restoration has sparked a renewed interest in the career of Bessie Abott, a granddaughter of the original owner of Pickens Hall. Preview: Civil War Weekend in Massena
Aug 21, 2003 — One of the largest Civil War reenactments in the region takes place at Robert Moses State Park in Massena this weekend. Music, cannon fire, military drills and campfire stories are part of the event. More than 5,000 men from St. Lawrence County enlisted in the Civil War, and New York contributed more soldiers to the war than any other state. Todd Moe caught up with John Baylis, of Cassville, NY, during last summer's event. Baylis, who has studied Lincoln's life for years, will portray "Honest Abe" again this weekend. Go to full article
West Nile Virus Threat Peaks in August
Aug 20, 2003 — While the threat of contracting rabies is at an all-time low in the North Country, the dangers of West Nile virus continue. Susan Patterson, a Public Health Educator in Franklin County, says there are 90 different species of mosquitoes, but the ones that carry West Nile are most active in August. Go to full article
Sailing on the St. Lawrence
Aug 01, 2003 — It's the height of boating season. On the St. Lawrence River, roaring cigarette boats and fishing boats share the water with kayakers, antique skiffs, and swift sailboats. Last summer David Sommerstein hitched a ride on the Gypsy Wind sailboat in Chippewa Bay to follow in the wake of rumrunners and other river rats. Go to full article
Singer Castle Opens To Public
Jul 29, 2003 — Starting this Saturday, people will get a chance to step inside an historic Scottish-style castle on the St. Lawrence River for the first time in a century. Since a group of investors purchased it last year, workers have been restoring Singer Castle on Dark Island. David Sommerstein took a tour of castle last summer before renovations began. St. Lawrence County Waterfalls Guide
Jul 25, 2003 — A 2002 guide to waterfalls in St. Lawrence County showcases some of the area's natural beauty. The 16-page, color brochure was produced for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce as a way to boost tourism. It features eight waterfalls, each with a bit of history and directions to the sites. The guide was written and photographed by St. Lawrence University student Tim Bouchard. Music Fills the Hills: The Seagle Music Colony
Jul 22, 2003 — For nearly 90 years, the Seagle Music Colony in the eastern Adirondacks has offered talented young singers a secluded summer haven to polish their skills. The seven-week music camp offers intensive training with music theater professionals and opportunities to appear in six Broadway-type productions, from Gershwin to Mozart. For decades, most of the Seagle Colony's shows have been presented in a simple barn theatre tucked away in the wooded hills above Schroon Lake. Todd Moe visited the opera camp last summer.
