Fire Guts Part of Downtown Theresa

Fire officials are keeping their eyes peeled for hot-spots from Sunday night's blaze that destroyed part of a downtown block in the village of Theresa in Jefferson County. The cause is still under investigation. The fire gutted the old post office, an old hotel built in the late 1800s, and threatened an existing bar and grill. Martha Foley talks with village mayor Ron Trickey, who declared a state of emergency so one of the buildings could be demolished immediately.  Go to full article

SUNY-Canton Receives Million Dollar Gift

A retired professor and former Canton village trustee has donated a million dollars to SUNY Canton. Dick Miller was a professor of electrical engineering technology for 37 years at SUNY Canton until his retirement in 1983. He then joined the Canton College Foundation's board of directors, and has now become its first million dollar donor.  Go to full article

Rock climbing is growing fast as one of the Adirondacks' most popular activities. But the men and women dangling from those cliffs on Poke O'Moonshine aren't just thrill seekers. Many climbers consider their sport a kind of art--a form of expression that some compare to modern dance. Arto Monaco: North Country Legend Dies, Age 90

Artist and theme park creator Arto Monaco passed away late last week at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Monaco had just celebrated his 90th birthday and was famous for designing magical places like the Land of Make Believe and Santa's Workshop. He spent the final years of his life living and working in Upper Jay. But his artistic creations were North Country landmarks - from Old Forge to Wilmington to Lake George. House Approves Energy Bill

The House has approved and sent to the Senate an energy bill that contains $23 billion worth of energy-related tax breaks. The bill faces a tough fight in the Senate, where some Democrats are threatening to filibuster because of a provision that protects the makers of a gasoline additive from lawsuits. North Country Congressman John McHugh lauded the bill's increased funding to promote energy efficiency in the North Country.  Go to full article

Riding the Rails

It was a much shorter trip - but still memorable. Two years ago, a passenger train made the run between Syracuse and Massena for the first time in more than 40 years.
