Cuomo wants to make Albany "work"

Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo continued a North Country swing of his RV tour for a "New New York" Friday.

Following campaign events in Warren and Jefferson counties, New York's attorney general stopped at the adult center in Saranac Lake, where he vowed to change the political atmosphere in Albany. Chris Morris was there.  Go to full article

North Country soldier orients military leaders in Afghanistan

A major reorganization of NATO's southern command in Afghanistan is underway as thousands of fresh US troops arrive in Kandahar. The units are part of President Obama's surge strategy and will play a key role in securing the Taliban stronghold.

Members of the 10th Mountain Division are among the new soldiers to arrive there. The green arrivals need to get oriented, especially those higher up in the chain of command. That task falls to people like Army Captain Sean Kane of Lake Placid. Kane's with Fort Drum's 1st Brigade.

He returned from Afghanistan last week. He told reporter Chris Morris he's enjoying a couple weeks of relaxation with his fiancée after his deployment.  Go to full article

Plan in the works to save Adirondack Visitor Center

The Adirondack Park Agency and Paul Smith's College are working on a memorandum of understanding to preserve the popular Visitor Interpretive Center near the college.

The center is on college land, but the Park Agency owns the buildings. The MOU would allow the college to buy them. State comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has to approve the deal, but local leaders, including college president John Mills, are optimistic. Chris Morris has the story.  Go to full article

Essex County files for authority to increase sales tax

Officials in Essex County are concerned with next year's budget projections. Some numbers show a potential 30 percent increase to the tax levy. In an effort to offset potential property tax increase, supervisors are moving forward with a plan to increase the sales tax. Yesterday, supervisors voted 14 to 3 to petition state lawmakers to grant the county with authority to increase the sales tax from 7.75 percent to 8 percent even. Conversation from Kabul: Capt. Sean Kane

About 3,500 troops from the Army's 10th Mountain Division's First Brigade Combat Team are in Afghanistan, part of the Obama Administration's strategy sending tens of thousands of troops, as well as trainers, diplomats, and economic aid to the region. Lake Placid native Sean Kane is among them. Kane is a captain with the Second Battalion 22nd Infantry Regiment.

Chris Morris of WNBZ in Saranac Lake checked in with Kane this week. The last time they spoke, Kane was just getting ready to leave Ft. Drum for Afghanistan. At the time he couldn't say where he was going or what he'd be doing; he's settling, at what he calls a critical time.  Go to full article

Momentum builds for Adirondack economic zone

A movement to establish an economic zone uniting the Adirondack Park is gaining momentum and encouraging new cooperation. A new caucus of the region's Albany lawmakers has reached out beyond party lines, and the economic zone could be an early success.

It won key approval last week from a broad coalition of elected officials, environmental groups and community activists. Chris Morris reports.  Go to full article

Sayward, Adirondack Lawmakers Pushing for ?Adirondack Empire Zone?

A newly-formed coalition of state lawmakers representing the Adirondacks hopes to chart a new agenda for the Park in Albany.

Last week, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward from Willsboro convened the Adirondack Legislators' Caucus for the first time. The goal is to create an economic development zone for the Park and to change the way Park Agency commissioners are chosen. Chris Morris has details.  Go to full article
