Feb 06, 2013 — In Potsdam yesterday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo again pushed his new initiative to create 10 Innovation "Hot Spots."
They'd bring business and universities together to give start-up businesses support, access to venture capital and possibly tax breaks.
The "Hot Spot" idea would fall under Cuomo's larger strategy to boost the upstate economy: the Regional Economic Development Councils. Go to full article

NY wine industry needs "masters"
Rensselaer, NY, Feb 05, 2013 — In October Gov. Andrew Cuomo held a summit in Albany to promote New York's wine, beer and spirits industry. In his 2013 state budget proposal, he also made provision for additional support for promoting New York products, including wine and beer, and promoting upstate tourism. But one upstate culinary center says that there's a piece of the puzzle missing from the governor's plans.

Clean tech industry could boost region's economy
Rochester, NY, Jan 28, 2013 — New York state ranks third in the world for the number of clean energy patents issued in the third quarter of 2012. The Clean Energy Patent Growth Index shows that the majority of the 63 patents issued during that period went to upstate inventors. Go to full article

Biomass deal a step in taking the corn out of ethanol
Rochester, NY, Jan 21, 2013 — Sweetwater Energy, based in Rochester, has made their second $100-million biomass deal in as many months.

School-based clinics get HHS boost
Dec 26, 2012 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded more than $5 million to school-based health centers in New York State last week.
The funding is part of an $80 million pot distributed to 197 centers around the nation.

NY universities collaborate to improve vet services
Rochester, NY, Nov 12, 2012 — A consortium of New York state university campuses is working to improve rural services for veterans and their families. Universities from across upstate New York, including Rochester, Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany and Syracuse, are taking part in a program funded by the Department of Health and Social Services to train people to work with veterans in the state's more remote areas. Labor Department deploys unemployment response teams
Rochester, NY, Oct 08, 2012 — A report from the New York State Labor Department shows the unemplyment rate in Upstate New York has gone up almost one percent in the past year, to 8.5 per cent as of August.
