Hyde Collection receives French print collection

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (AP) A Texas law school professor has donated an extensive collection of 19th century French prints and books to a museum in upstate New York.

The donation of 94 items from Tobin Sparling was the second major donation this year to the Hyde Collection of Glens Falls. Earlier this year, the museum received 128 photographs by 14 significant photographers from former presidential adviser George Stephanopoulos.  Go to full article

NY fishing touted in new TV tourism ads

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York's finest fishing waters from Long Island to the Thousand Islands are featured in a TV tourism ad unveiled by Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the weekend.

Cuomo was in the Finger Lakes hosting the Bassmaster Governor's Challenge on Owasco Lake while the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament was taking place on Cayuga Lake. It was one of a series of tourism promotional events held by Cuomo around the state, which have included snowmobiling in Tug Hill and whitewater rafting in the Adirondacks.  Go to full article

NY products featured in new vending machines

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) New vending machines featuring New York's homegrown products have been introduced at the State Fair and will soon be added at state-run highway rest areas across the state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says proceeds from the machines at the fair will benefit the Food Bank of Central New York.  Go to full article

Searchers comb woods in 1994 missing woman case

MEXICO, N.Y. (AP) A search team continues to look for remains of 1994 kidnapping victim Heidi Allen in Oswego County woods.

Allen was last seen in early April 1994 working at a convenience store in the town of New Haven. Her body was never found, but a jury convicted Gary Thibodeau of kidnapping her.  Go to full article

Hasidic village sues to block Orange County casino

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A Hasidic Jewish village has mounted a legal challenge seeking to halt a casino proposed for upstate New York.

The lawsuit filed by the village of Kiryas Joel in Orange County alleges that officials in two nearby communities offered support for the project without analyzing the impact it would have on the village.  Go to full article

Essex County man sentenced for stealing $717K from employer

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) A 64-year-old northern New York man has been sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for stealing more than $700,000 from his longtime employer.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that Lawrence Jaques received the maximum sentence Wednesday in Essex County Court, where he pleaded guilty in June to a grand larceny charge. He was also ordered to repay the money he stole, plus a 10-percent surcharge.  Go to full article

Canton ex-guard pleads guilty to running family off road

CANTON, N.Y. (AP) A former jail guard is facing more than 10 years behind bars for running his family off a northern New York during a domestic dispute last fall.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that 33-year-old Douglas Matthews Jr. of Canton pleaded guilty Wednesday in St. Lawrence County Court to an assault charge stemming from the October crash on Route 310 in the town of Canton.  Go to full article

Gov. Cuomo to host fishing tournament

OWASCO LAKE, N.Y. (AP) New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to welcome professional fishermen to the Finger Lakes for the Bassmaster Governor's Challenge.

The governor's office says Saturday's event at Owasco Lake is designed to promote fishing and other recreational activities in upstate New York.  Go to full article

State Police, local cops get new bulletproof vests

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Nearly $300,000 has been awarded to help the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies purchase 708 new bulletproof vests.
