The new South Downs National Park is in the southeastern corner of Britain.
(01/13/10) The Adirondack Park continues to be a lightning rod in the North Country. The debate often pits conservationists against development. Last October state Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward declared that "the great experiment is a failure" because of its constraints on economic development. Green groups argue that the Park is a boon for local economies that trade on the region's unique character.

One question is whether the Adirondack model is one that can be exported and used around the world. For example, former APA chairman Ross Whaley expressed skepticism in an interview last year. But across the Atlantic, in Great Britain, a similar scenario is being played out.

A national park in southeast England is using similar land use and zoning rules. Jacob Resneck visited the area recently and found that conservation efforts across the Atlantic are sparking a very similar debate. more

APA streamlines review of telecom towers
(12/12/08) Adirondack Park Agency commissioners have approved a new rule that would, in many cases, streamline the review process for telecommunications towers. Some environmentalists have resisted the change, which would allow APA staff to approve permits without bringing the project before the APA's Board of Commissioners. Jacob Resneck reports. more

The missing men of the "Indian Lake triangle"
(11/07/08) The vast forests and river valleys around Indian Lake in Hamilton County offer some of the wildest and most beautiful country in the Adirondacks. But that sparsely-settled region can also be dangerous. Since 2006, three men have disappeared near Indian Lake. The most recent vanished this fall. Some officials have taken to calling the area the "Indian Lake Triangle." As Jacob Resneck reports, forest rangers charged with patrolling the area downplay the idea of any mystery. They say some visitors simply aren't prepared for the rugged, remote terrain.
