Heard Up North: sweet potato art

Listen to this story
You could file today's Heard Up North under "culinary art." Massena woodcarver Ron Riley has been teaching young people how to carve soap and wood into toys and walking sticks. He also uses a root vegetable - the sweet potato - as an inexpensive medium for art instruction. Sweet potato art is today's Heard Up North - and you thought the orange tubers were only good baked or mashed.
