North Country Couple Builds Straw Bale Home

Homes made of straw have come a long way since the folktale about three little pigs and a big bad wolf. As traditional building materials such as wood and drywall are getting more expensive, many environmentally aware people are turning to other materials to build their homes, not only for cost, but also for insulation, ease and visual appeal. A North Country couple chose straw construction a few years ago as an antidote to cookie-cutter home designs and to build it themselves. They also harness the power of the sun as a cure for big electric and lighting bills. It may sound primitive, but as Todd Moe found out, their Parishville home is warm and inviting
