Jan 10, 2008 — Gov. Spitzer drew a straight line between education and New York's economy saying investment in the SUNY and CUNY systems would be a "down payment on tomorrow's dreams." He proposed a $4 billion endowment for SUNY and CUNY and free tuition for New York's returning veterans, and said he wants to make higher education affordable for every New Yorker. United University Professions, the union representing most SUNY faculty, said the governor is on the right track with his proposals for investment in higher education in the state. Union president Fred Floss said, "SUNY needs a reliable funding stream to move the university and our economy forward." SUNY Potsdam president John Schwaller told Jonathan Brown he likes the Governor's plans to hire thousands of professors.
