UPDATE: Ortloff faces likely Federal child-sex charges

News organizations are reporting this morning that former North Country Assemblyman Chris Ortloff has been arrested in a Plattsburgh hotel room on charges that he solicited underage sex. WPTZ cited information from Assistant US Attorney Thomas Spina, who said that Ortloff was being held in Albany County jail and will appear in Federal Court today.

According to the New York Post, Ortloff, age 61, was arrested following a sting at five p.m. on Monday. The paper reported that Ortloff allegedly tried to arrange a date on the internet with "an underaged victim." Officials told the Post that Ortloff had child porn and "sex paraphernalia" in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Ortloff, a Lake Placid native, is married with two sons. He served in the Assembly for twenty years, including a stint as the assistant minority leader. He was also chairman of the Republican Party in Clinton County. Ortloff began his career as a broadcaster and served as master of ceremonies for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He currently serves on the state Board of Parole, a paid position that draws a salary of $102,000. He was appointed by former Governor George Pataki in 2006. His term expires in 2012. Attempts to reach Ortloff have been unsuccessful.
