Summerstown, ON, Jun 02, 2009 — The bridge between Canada and the US that crosses Mohawk territory near Massena is closed again this morning. Akwesasne Mohawks are protesting Canada's plan to arm officers at the border crossing there. Canadian customs officers abandoned their posts late Sunday night after informal talks between the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Canadian Border Services Agency yielded no results. (03/28/2013) Alcoa and Reynolds Metals will pay almost $20 million to restore habitat and wildlife on the St. Lawrence River near Massena. The settlement ends a more than 20-year-old lawsuit spearheaded by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.
(05/21/2013) The federal trust in charge of finding a new life for the General Motors property in Massena say the process is more marathon than sprint. But as David Sommerstein reports, they're hopeful a lift from a railroad giant will help.
