Canadian cable drops Watertown's WPBS-TV

A North Country public broadcaster is disappearing from the line-up of one of Canada's largest cable providers. Rogers Cable will replace WPBS-TV with a public television station in Detroit next month. The Watertown television station, south across the U.S. border from the Canada's capital, has sponsored concerts and events in Ottawa. According to The Ottawa Citizen, about 23% of the station's membership is in the Ottawa area. Ottawa area businesses are regular underwriters of WPBS programming. And the broadcast schedule reflects Canadian tastes. Tom Hanley is president of the Watertown public TV station. He told Jonathan Brown WPBS learned of Rogers' decision from an Ottawa viewer.
