Albany, NY, Oct 07, 2009 — State Senator Malcolm Smith represents the 14th Senate District in Queens. The southern border of the 14th is the Atlantic Ocean -- as far as the upstate-downstate divide goes, geographically, that's about as far from the North Country as you can get. The Democrat is currently temporary president of the New York State Senate. He was Senate Majority Leader for a few short months this year, until Senators Pedro Espada and Hiram Monserrate, both fellow Democrats, threw their support behind the Republican minority in early June, setting off a 5-week standoff over leadership. During a visit to Canton this week, he told Martha Foley that he is one of the legislative leaders asking Governor Paterson for a plan to mend the budget gap.
(03/12/2014) Hundreds of prison guards, many from the North Country, rallied yesterday outside the Capitol in Albany, demanding that Gov. Andrew Cuomo cancel a plan to mothball four state prisons in July.
