(12/21/09) The 2010 Winter Olympics begin in Vancouver in less than two months and it looks like at least one North Country athlete will be ready.

Biathlete Tim Burke, from Paul Smiths, claimed the lead this weekend in overall world cup standings. Martha Foley has more.

Biathlon is a sport that combines endurance cross-country ski racing with rifle marksmanship.

This is the first time that a U.S. athlete has ever claimed the top spot in world competition.  Burke spoke on a conference call Sunday from Slovenia.

Burke is one of nine North Country athletes expected to compete in Vancouver.  He credited the Adirondacks' long Olympic heritage for sparking his own career.

Burke claimed the top spot on Saturday after edging a French biathlete on the final lap of the competition in Slovenia.
