Cornwall, ON, Mar 04, 2010 — The North Country will have a second team in a new professional hockey league debuted next winter. The Akwesasne Warriors will play at the arena known as the Turtle Dome on Cornwall Island. Martha Foley has more.
Ottawa-based businessman Basem Awwad will be the team's owner and president.
From my understanding there used to be a team called the Akwesasne Warriors there are apparently they were very popular. They attract a big crowd to their lacrosse games in the summer, so we're hoping that people from Cornwall and Massena and all the surrounding areas right along the St. Lawrence River would come and follow our team as well.
Awwad owns two fast-food Greek restaurants in Ottawa. He plays hockey and says he wanted to do something he loves and give back to the community. He originally wanted the team to be in Ottawa, but there wasn't any available ice time.
The single "A" Federal Hockey League is scheduled to begin playing games in November. A team called the Thousand Islands Privateers will play at the Bonnie Castle recreation center in AlexandriaBay. Rome, New York and Danbury, Connecticut will also host teams.
