Preview: "Spelling Bee" in Potsdam

Listen to this story
A Tony award winning Broadway musical comedy opens at SUNY-Potsdam tonight in Snell Music Theatre (8 pm). The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a partnership between the college's departments of Chemistry and Theatre and Dance. Nearly 600 chemists from around the region are on campus this week for their annual meeting, and the show is partly for their entertainment. Performances are open to all. The student-led production is a one act show that centers around a fictional spelling bee at Putnam Valley Middle School and includes six quirky adolescents and three equally quirky adults. There's also audience participation. Todd Moe spoke with cast members Bernie Mulvaney, Kelley Burns and Tyler Thomas about their characters and the show.
