Essex County faces a big gap of its own

Like counties across New York State, Essex County is caught in a worsening squeeze between providing services mandated by New York State, and diminishing state aid to help pay for them. The tough economy doesn't help.

As Albany lawmakers struggle to come to grips with the remaining billion dollars or so of deficit, Essex County's supervisors are looking at a $7 million deficit of their own. As Martha Foley reports, the county manager says tough choices are coming.
